Navigating Cases When Abuse is Present
H & D CLE

12:00-1:15 p.m.

Description: Join Judge Ashleigh S. Parker, a Wake County, NC District Court Judge, for an insightful seminar on addressing various forms of abuse within the legal system. This session explores seven types of abuse: physical, sexual, financial, technological, immigrant, spiritual, and litigation abuse.
Attendees will learn how to recognize these forms of abuse, even when survivors may not identify their experiences as such and understand the impact abuse has in cases involving child support, custody, and other legal matters. Judge Parker will offer strategies to minimize survivor-abuser contact through thoughtful judgments, promote mental health support for all parties, and foster empathy and education about abuse cycles.
A special focus will be given to litigation abuse—the misuse of the court system to control or harass—along with protections in other states. Participants will leave with practical tools to better support survivors and understand the nuances of abuse across different legal contexts. The seminar also provides valuable resources and guidance for attorneys, judges, and advocates working with affected individuals.
