Animal Law in Maine: An Introduction

At this point, probably more lawyers in Maine have handled an animal matter than not.  But most do not know that animal law has achieved its own specialty, with an established precedent of cases in some areas, and an increasingly awareness by the Courts.  The ABA started its Animal Law Committee in 2004, and Maine recently formed its own Animal Law Committee of the Maine Bar Association. 

This CLE will offer a brief history of animal law, both nationwide and in Maine, and then will delve into some selected topics.  The CLE will explore where Maine law currently stands on issues such as dangerous dog cases, custody cases involving animals, professional negligence cases, and how animal law has intersected with tort and property law, including the law governing recovery for emotional distress. Animal law is much broader than most understand, but this CLE will give you an introduction to the area and will inform you of where you might want to devote part of your practice, if you want to be an animal lawyer.
