How Bias Impacts the Legal Workplace

Panelists will review the history and implementation of the new Maine CLE rule that states:

“As part of the required credit hours referenced in Rule 5(c)(1), attorneys must earn at least one in-person credit hour in the recognition and avoidance of harassment and discriminatory communication or conduct related to the practice of law as set out in the Maine Rules of Professional Conduct. . .”

Panelists will also discuss the Maine Code of Judicial Conduct Canon amendment that states in part, “A judge shall perform the duties of judicial office, including administrative duties, without bias or prejudice" as well as recent revisions to the Code of Conduct for United States Judges and the Code of Conduct for United States Judicial Employees.  What is the role of the judiciary in preventing bias in the courtroom?
